Cooking in a small space without cluttering the worktop
Organise ingredients, utensils and hot cookware when space is limited.
Work backwards from serving time, allowing for rests, long cooking and delicate finishing.
Note which dishes need the oven, pan, saucepan or a rest. Pizza and tart may require different oven temperatures. Mousse needs chilling; bruschetta needs last-minute topping.
Compote, cold components and pasta sauce can free time later when stored appropriately. Measure ingredients and clear equipment before cooking. A simmering dish still requires attention.
Have sauce ready before draining pasta. Toast bread and add its topping late to avoid softening. Plan one short final task rather than several delicate actions at once.
With one burner, precook potatoes before using the pan. With one oven, organise sequential baking according to recipes and storage requirements. Include draining, preheating and cooling in the plan.
Prepare dressing and salad components in suitable containers. Start potatoes, then prepare mushrooms while they cook. Drain, cook mushrooms and brown potatoes. Assemble salad near serving; actual timings depend on your kitchen.
